WEBSITE CONTENT
GUIDELINES
It's
important for you to come up with the right text for us to
edit. We'll advise you, but it is your description of your
company in your words that we need. This is a great opportunity
to reflect your personality and attract some customers! Don’t
concentrate purely on keyword density (although still
important) relevancy and presentation are key – surfers will
only come back to your site if they find your articles useful,
and the information you present easy to understand.
What makes good web
content?
It must be easy to
read: make web content that
is easily readable by both human readers and search
engines, keep the sentences short and snappy. Writing for
a publication is not the same as writing for the web. Web
content should be at least 50% shorter.
'Chunk'
text: (break text into
short, easily understandable segments for clarity.) Keep
Paragraphs short, and add bullet points when necessary.
Use coloured and bold texts to emphasize important
points. This helps web readers scanning the document to
easily find exactly what it is they are looking for.
Good
structure: Forget about
saving the best things for last. The reader (and search
engines) needs to be able to read your main point at the
very start. Keep the most important information at the
top, and develop it as the web content progresses.
Text and
images: Web content is not
exclusive to text, so consider your images as well. Make
sure they are relevent and labelled so that search
engines can detect them.
Presentation:
Just as important – the page should be professional
looking and functional to make navigation intuitive. Even
the best-written web content is useless if it is hard to
find.
Your web content should be organized so that it makes most
sense to the users. Think about adding appropriate
links for easier referencing – this way, your readers can
jump from one related article to the next without much effort.
Develop a ‘flow chart' even before you start building web
content – this will help you define exactly what text you need,
and in what order. Test it out on people and accept their
comments.
