Why Does Linking Matter
so Much?
The search engines are very
sensitive to a site's 'link equity', ie the links from your
website to other sites, and links from other sites to yours.
Links are important to the search engines because:
1: They help find new sites.
2: They help define the subject and
content of your site.
3: The opposite is also true, your links
to other sites help the search engines define their
content and subject.
4: Many of today's search engines began
life as university catalogue systems, "they think like
librarians" each website a book. The links on a site are
like the bibliography, a cross-reference that helps the
librarian understand where the book fits, theme and
subject-wise.
Linking Works
When done correctly, linking is very
effective. Type 'miserable failure' into Google. You will see
the official biography for George W Bush in #1 position.
Obviously the site doesn't contain that term! This is a classic
example of the power of linking. A lot of webmasters with a
sense of humour have all linked to George W's site using the
term 'miserable failure' in the link text. Along with good
content,
attracting good quality links will greatly
improve your site's ranking with the search
engines.
